Hanging garden - Brussels

The owner of this property in Brussels was standing on the roof and saw the two side walls of the neighbours shooting up 20 metres. He thought: ‘There in the sky, between those two walls, that's where I want to live. In a floating glass box. With a hanging garden underneath.'

From the terraces at this private retreat, you have spectacular views from the Bois de la Cambre to the Koekelberg, and from Brussels North to the spheres of the Atomium. The terrace enveloped in greenery creates a transition to the view of the large trees in the distance. Through the use of large climbing plants (Wisteria flor. ‘Alba’, Parthenocissus tr. ‘Veitchii’, Wisteria sin. ‘Issai’, Fallopia, Trachelospermum jasminoides, Wisteria ‘Golden King’) on the two side walls and the planting of Acer palmatum ‘Fireglow’ and Cornus controversa ‘Variegata’, among others, creates a small green oasis in the form of a hanging garden with an eye on aesthetics through diversity in structures, shapes and species.

Acer palmatum ‘Fireglow’ (Red Japanese Maple)

Acer palmatum ‘Fireglow’ lives up to its name with its intense red-purple leaves. This compact ornamental tree retains its vibrant colour throughout the growing season and takes on a breathtaking scarlet glow in autumn. Thanks to its upright, elegant growth habit, ‘Fireglow’ is ideal for small gardens or as an eye-catcher in borders.

Cornus controversa ‘Variegata’ (Giant dogwood cultivar)

Cornus controversa ‘Variegata’, is a beautiful ornamental tree with striking, creamy-white hemmed leaves. Its layered, storied growth habit gives it a unique, architectural look. In spring it blooms with umbels of white flowers, followed by dark berries that are popular with birds. In autumn, the leaves turn to warm shades of yellow and orange. ‘Variegata’ is a real eye-catcher in any garden and ideal as a solitair thanks to its unique shape and splendour of colour.
